Philadelphia – Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) scored 20 points and nailed six three-pointers as Drexel defeated George Mason, 61-49, in front of a sellout crowd at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons (9-2, 1-0 CAA) held the Patriots (5-5, 0-1) to just six field goals in the second half en route to their seventh straight win.
Drexel led by just one with 14:13 to play, but scored seven straight points to take a 45-37 lead. Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) scored the first five points during that stretch, first sinking a three-pointer and then scoring on a breakaway lay-up after a Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) steal. The Patriots ended the run with a Will Thomas jumper, but Mejia nailed his fifth three-pointer of the game less than a minute later to increase the lead to nine points. Mason couldn't cut the lead to less than eight points the rest of the way.
Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) had a big game on the boards for Drexel. The senior tied a career-high with 14 boards and blocked a pair of shots. He finished with eight points. Elegar had 12 points, eight in the second half, and seven rebounds. Hawthorne was also in double figures with 10 points.
Will Thomas led the Patriots with 19 points and eight rebounds. He was 9-for-15 from the field. Folarin Campbell added 11 points. George Mason was just 1-for-9 from long range in the contest.
Drexel is off until after the New Year. The Dragons visit Georgia State for the first time since the Panthers joined the CAA., when the two teams play a rare weekday afternoon game on Jan. 3 at noon. The game can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
